Kitchen Roll Magic Drawing Science

Kitchen Roll Magic Drawing Science

Recently in our Learning and Exploring Through Group a member shared a fabulous experiment she had been busy doing at home. With us currently in lockdown here in the UK I like to have a bank of activities in mind ready for the next day. I'm finding that going with the flow works best for us but as and when the children are getting a little wild an activity can bring back some calm and focus.

I am sharing on our stories on Instagram lots of simply play ideas so make sure you're following us over there too.

I set this up the night before and it took around 20 minutes to prepare.

You will need:
Sharpie Pen
Felt Tip Pens - (any should work)
Kitchen Roll Sheets
A Plate
Water
A Jug

With many of us unable to leave the house as freely more and more people are seeking easy things to do that use up materials that we already have in at home. Hopefully this is one of these activities for you.

You start by folding a sheet of kitchen roll in half. On the top half of your tissue sheet you use the sharpie pen to draw a large, bold picture. You will need a protection under the tissue as the felts and sharpie will go through the tissue. I used a sheet of cardboard that protected the surface just fine.

Draw your picture and when you're done, open up the kitchen towel. Inside you will see that your image has came through and is visible. This is the part that you colour in with your normal felts.

When all your drawings and colouring is done it's time to move on to the next stage. I would advise that you gather several drawings ready to go. This experiment is great fun but it's over quickly and the children will be keen to move on to the next one quickly. With this being the most time consuming part having your pictures ready to go will mean that you can keep the children entertained for longer.

I did 6 drawings altogether. This was for an introduction to the activity. The children are now keen to do their own drawings to try. That will be something that we may do this afternoon.

Moving on to the experiment.....

You will need a plate or a tray that is white. It's important that the plate or tray doesn't have any patterns as this could stop the effectiveness of the experiment.

Using a jug/cup pour a shallow amount of water onto a plate/tray. With your kitchen towel folded over in half carefully place it into the water. Just like magic you will see the outline of your picture fill with beautiful colours.

Lets see this activity in action:

We did a few basic pictures - a train, a bumble bee, a helicopter, the earth, flowers and a turtle. Nice and simple but large enough to be effective.

You can try any design you wish. Popping onto Google and searching for easy drawings for kids is great as it really breaks down the stages of how to draw simple things.

Lots of fun and an activity I am sure we will be doing lots and lots over the coming weeks.

The children asked to do this activity again the following day so instead of pictures we used patterns and rainbows as our theme. Here is how it turned out -

I am also thinking about how we could do this for more themes in the future. I really want to do some Famous Artist inspired ones. I shall update the post as and when we add to the collection of ideas for Magic Drawing and would love to see any that you get up to too! You can share them with me using any of the social channels below:
