Everyone Loves A Good Conker Toss Challenge

The title says it all.

Everyone loves a good conker toss challenge.

Little N (as most toddlers do) is really enjoying throwing at the moment.
She has lots of different textured balls and bean bags which she enjoys playing with.
She is very accurate too. We often play bowling and her aim is pretty impressive for her age.

A last minute activity today which hardly required any set up time.

I gathered together a couple of containers and 14 washed shiny, brown conkers.

Little N sat down in front of the containers.

We began by throwing conkers into the container while they were pretty close. After a short while we moved the containers furthur away. Little N loves this and giggled happily to herself as she was throwing conkers whether she was successful or not.

She enjoyed recollecting them in her basket once they had all been thrown and then would return to repeat the activity again.

Off her own back she began to count the conkers as she threw them. This was something I was hoping to see her do. This was the reason why I selected 14 conkers. She is counting to 13 at the moment so having 14 reinforces what she already knows along with adding an extra one to build on her learning.

Little N happily did this activity for around 20 minutes. I joined in too and we celebrated our successful throws together.

Little N then asked for a spoon. She walked over to her cooking toy box and selected a wooden spoon. She placed all the conkers into the sieve and began to mix them around. They made an interesting sound as she did this. She then enjoyed transferring the conkers from one container to the other by tipping them out.

This activity was such a hit I plan on having this task out for a few days this week adding some twists along the way of course.

We are hosting a Halloween Party this year too and I am always looking for new games to play.
We have children attending too and this game is great for people of all ages.
I am planning to label up the containers with numbers and have the adults throwing conkers under a time limit. Successful throws will have their numbers added together and the one to score the most will win a prize. Of course the little ones can play this freely as and if they wish to.

Learning:

- Gross motor control
- Engaged in an activity
- Rigid attention
- Developing language
- Imaginative Play
- Counting
- Sharing/Turn Taking

Extending:

I am going to keep this activity available for part of/possibly all week.
I plan to make the activity a little different by using tubes to filter the conkers through.
