There have been a few birthdays lately between friends and family. The boys have been watching us celebrate. They have spoken A LOT about the cakes and they've started to mutter along to the Happy Birthday song which is beyond adorable. I have noticed as they play they keep using objects to pretend they're cakes. They will pretend to put candles on the cake and proudly present it to who ever is about wishing them a happy birthday and asking them to blow the candles out.
They showed me during the Duck Small World that they had an interest in making cakes so today - that's exactly what we did.

Recently we were kindly sent a box of goodies from Zimpli Kids. It was this box and the boys current interests that inspired this activity - Sensory Cake Making.
I did place a little order on Amazon to help me with this activity. 24 silicon cake cases - UK / US - I loved the brightly coloured cases. They will come in for lots of our play activities too. I have put 12 aside for play and another 12 aside for using in the kitchen.
This isn't the first time I have used products from this company. From experience I know that the content of the boxes really does go a long way. With this in mind - I only used a third of the contents for this activity. It was plenty and means we can use the same pack a couple of times over the summer for even more play activities.
It takes just a few moments for the contents to expand and be ready to play with. I popped it inside of a plastic tub and added different coloured spoons.
They couldn't wait to get stuck in. I brought this snack divider tray from Asda last year but they have them on sale again this year. They have all different colours. We use them to divide up crafts and they are fabulous with play dough!
I have dried food that I use for play set ups sealed away in air tight containers. We have used them time and time again for play. For this activity I added a small handful of coloured rice, chick peas and lentils. They were great to use as the sprinkles on top of the cakes.

It's Gellibaff
...... we couldn't recommend it anymore!
It's a wonderful sensory texture and they have a huge range of different medias that children will LOVE playing with!
We have used it to create -
Duck Small World
Dinosaur Small World
In the tall sauce pots behind I added some coloured salt which the boys enjoyed sprinkling over the tops of the cakes. They counted the candles into the cakes and they mentioned the colours they were using too!
Around the tray I had scattered numbers and letters. Just to prompt some discussion whilst they played together.
Lets see this activity in action:
There was lots and lots of singing. There was also lots of blowing out of candles. They absolutely melt my heart!
They made cakes for themselves, each other and for me. This activity kept them busy for around 40 minutes. When their big sister came home from school they couldn't wait to show her what they had been busy doing. That kept them busy for another 20 minutes or so playing alongside her.
I always like to share with you what the set ups look like once the children have finished. This is how the boys left it the first time. The cakes placed together housing copious amounts of candles.
It had been a wonderful activity that the children really did enjoy. I am now planning to do more cake related activities now school is out for summer. We shall be getting the play dough out to make some play dough cakes with the play dough tools and cutters. We shall also be making yummy cakes to eat in the kitchen.
Until next time - keep playing and having fun.
